Adventure-ing: Firsts, Part 1

It’s not so so often that we get to do things for the first time anymore. There are first steps, first words, first kiss, first vacations alone, first apartments and room mates, the list goes on. But! As the list grows, the big momentous firsts become few and far between. Yesterday, though, I got to experience buying my first new car. Meet the jelly bean:

It is a bubble of a go-kart, and it screams Lauren-Mobile. It was delivered to Kamel’s work at 11:15 am yesterday, and I received a flood of photos. I hadn’t even seen the car yet, as it was living in Vallejo (Hi Allison!) before it was ours (Mine. Ours… mostly mine).

With the baby coming I wanted to make sure we got a new, safer car. I couldn’t imagine having a car seat in my little 98 Corolla that mostly feels like a tin can. Good ‘ol Corolla did me right for many years, but it’s time for the jelly bean to take over. Plus! Check out these safety ratings:

I worked late again yesterday so I didn’t step off the train until 7:00 pm. Kamel picked me up in our old car and brought me to his office where the new car was waiting. It’s just so cool to be able to pick out a car and then one day it is yours. It’s just… the coolest thing. The Yaris isn’t a luxury vehicle, and buying a new car isn’t as momentous as having your first kid, but it’s just so damn fun! I’ve never had electric locks or power windows before! And now all I have to do is push a button and the car is locked or unlocked. My friends will be relieved that I no longer have to remind them, like a parrot, to “Lock your doors! Lock your doors! Don’t forget to lock your doors!”

This is me after driving the car home and parking it, adorable little jelly bean that it is, in it’s new parking spot. Success!

Have you had any firsts lately? Any Adventure-ing going on in your life? Big or small I would love to hear about it. Email me at betterinrealife at the gmails with your stories if interested.

  1. I believe that car needs to go on an adventure.

    ;)

  2. Yay! Congratulations! I’m looking forward to “first trip to Europe”!!! Maybe I’ll email you that story when I return. :)

    • That would be amazing! I would love love to run it! :)

  3. Yay! We have a (non-hatchback) Yaris in that exact color. I love it! What a great first.

  4. Congratulations ! And I second Margosita… I believe you should go on a road trip , and eat lots of candy and chocolate from the gas station.

  5. It IS a jelly bean! Baby’s gonna be ridin’ in style.

We are starting the adventure of trying to buy our first house. I know it’s gotta be an adventure because it makes me simultaneously excited and terrified! ;)

  6. Love, love LOVE it! Love the color, love the SPOILER! AND the pretty blue seats! Congratulations, thats so exciting. Now…..BABY GENDER AND NAME PLEASE! Youre killing me, Smalls! ;-) <3

    • Amanda!!! You are the best. I don’t know yet! Not until 430 this afternoon. :) :)

  7. We bought a house last night. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

  8. Ooooooh, power windows? AND locks??? You are living the dream.

    No, that’s not sarcasm . . . we’re rockin’ the car that I got for my 16th birthday. That’s right . . . 1998 Dodge Neon, baby!! It’s been good to me, it really has. But still . . . new car smell . . . mmmm.

    • That is exactly what I am leaving behind! My highschool ride, 98 corolla! what what!

  9. Yay new car!! And it must be close to your scan time now????? We’re currently looking for our first house :)

  10. If I drove, and if I could currently justify the expense of a car that is the exact one I want. I drool over the Yaris. It might not be luxury, but it’s big enough to be functional, small enough to be good on gas and the shape is so fun.

Life for me is pretty unadventurous right now as we’re taking some time to just enjoy our first year of marriage and otherwise recover after a pretty rough year. We had too many unplanned upheavals in the year to emotionally be in the space to be ready for more adventures. I’m looking forward to a few months from now when I’ve had some time to just settle into life again and am ready to start adventuring again.

I am a writer living in Seattle and I believe that life is a grand adventure and only boring if you believe it to be. Plus! You don't need money to have fun.

I live with my husband, a photographer by education and a maker-of-video-games by trade, and a baby named gabe in an apartment on the hill.

I am romantic about most things and I cry... about almost anything. I tell stories to entertain you, I spread stories to keep you in the loop. I am not a grammar freak, but I do know how to spell it. I am exceedingly proud of my scrambled eggs and I really could eat an entire pan of cupcakes. If I met me, I would be my best friend. I tend to be irreverent.
