Book List 2 and (drum roll please) The Winner!

Ok, so… I had this awesome, thoughtful, and funny post written and then wordpress ate it. And I had to re-make the book list with all of the links and everything and it took me FOREVER. So you are getting the abbreviated version. Sad face and frustration inserted here.

Here are the cliffnotes: I buy most of the books from powells for myself (some I get on the kindle, but only about 2-3 depending). I buy a mix of used and new to keep the cost of the investment a little lower. But! The winner of today’s list will get a box-o-books with all of them In Real Life. That wasn’t thoughtful or funny, sigh. Technology you have thwarted me!!!

The List:

1.) 11/22/63 by Stephen King

2.) The Magicians by Lev Grossman

3.) Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

4.) The People of Paper by Salvador Plascencia

5.) Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig

6.) Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell

7.) Run With the Horsemen by Ferrol Sams

8.) The Likeness by Tana French

9.) Hopscotch by Julio Cortazar

10.) A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore

11.) Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

12.) Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel

13.) A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

14.) Under the Feet of Jesus by Helena Maria Viramontes

15.) Dragonfly In Amber by Diana Gabaldon (My contribution to the recommendations … Outladner #2)

And the winner of this awesome list as chosen by! Renee Lawrence! (email me at betterinrealife at the gmail so we can get all the deets handled.)

This is feeling all a little rushed to me, and that is annoying  – but I have to run off and catch a flight to Mexico City for some family business this weekend. Which means – no blog for Monday. But! Next week I’ll be talking about early pregnancy fashion: The war on comfort. Have a lovely weekend everything and happy reading!!

  1. Yay books!!

ps: my friend was reading “Dirty Job” by Christopher Moore the other day when she picked me up from Ballet – and her description of it has stayed in my mind – it seems totally rad!

  2. Oooo, Mexico City, how cool. I’d love to go but I don’t know anyone there, so I’m a big chicken. I’m so happy you’re reading The People of Paper! I love Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It felt…well, zen.

  3. great list, lauren!! i had written some of these titles down from your original post. i’m excited to see which ones made the cut. i look forward to your discussion posts, whee!!!

  4. Look what happens when you take a long holiday – Lauren tells us she’s pregnant and does the best ever giveaway. So tremendously many congratulations to you and your baby family (tiny jokes!).
Also, and I know this is pretty late to the party, but I did a lot of reading on holiday and a couple were so wonderful I want to recommend to everyone I meet:
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – magic and stylish and charming and incredible.
The Glass Castle – Jeannette Walls – fascinating memoir about growing up in an intensely unstructured (some would say abusive) family. Not at all a “misery memoir” – not keen on those. Life affirming and intriguing.
