Flashback Friday: Nostalgia

*Sometimes on Fridays I take a break from thinking up stories and interesting tidbits to share and delve into my currently unpublished blog that goes all the way back to Nov of 2006. Today Summer and my wanderlust is calling. A few years ago memories were transporting me here and there and everywhere. What is your best summer memory? What sight/smell/song throws you back in time? What is your nostalgic trigger?

I’ve been thrust full of nostalgia lately. Saturday I saw the most beautiful sunset on the rocky coast right near the GG bridge and man it was my child hood in the summer all over again. The salt air, the chill in the wind, the dreaminess of it all. Then a song comes on the radio at work and suddenly It’s a lazy saturday in college in may three years ago and I’m laying on my boyfriends bed, barelegged in a skirt, singing. I can still feel his comforter and smell his sheets. The feeling of hot cement is a direct correlation with the playground and the way the birds sing when it’s sunny out vs foggy in the morning are forever tied with yellow sheets and dream catcher hanging above my bed. Splinters and breakfast on the deck in my barefeet or resting them on the dashboard, flipflops abandoned on the floor of the truck with the windows all down. What is it about summer that makes us remember so many things?

  1. The smell of saltwater always reminds me of being in bed after a long day at the beach: sunburned, exhausted, well-fed, and feeling like I’m still bobbing up and down with the waves.
